After the confirmation of the presence of CSF in Santa Marta, the Colombian Agriculture and Livestock Institute (ICA) has started the established protocols for the control and eradication of this disease in this town.

Among the established measures for reducing the risk of the spreading of this disease, the ICA has quarantined the affected farm and has established the control and disinfection measures in the region. So, no pigs will be abe to enter or exit this farm, located in the 20 de Octubre quarter, until the outbreak has been totally controlled.

The epidemiologic study carried out on the farm identified 171 pigs, of which 123 were ill, and up to now 111 have died. Additionally, non-vaccinated animals were detected, so the ICA makes a plea to the pig producers so they keep on with the vaccination of the animals.

In the face of the presence of CSF outbreaks in the department of Magdalena since 2014, the ICA has been carrying out prevention and control actions in the municipalities of Santa Ana, Pijiño del Carmen, San Sebastián de Buenavista and San Zenón, and now in Santa Marta, so the latter has been declared an endemic department to CSF.
