According to information from Porkcolombia, there were 5.19 million head of pigs slaughtered in 2021, which represents an increase of 3.8% compared to the 5.00 million head harvested in 2020. Pork production for 2021 closed at 491,233 tons, a 4.9% increase compared to the previous year (468,429 t).
Imports saw an increase of 72.8% from 76,050 t in 2020 to 131,443 t in 2021. The increases seen in terms of slaughter, production, and imports are related to the increase in per capita consumption which reached 12.2 kg in 2021, up 13% compared to the estimated 10.8 kg in 2020.
Live pig prices have reached historical levels throughout 2021, consolidating an annual average of COP $7,564/kg, up 38% compared to the average in 2020 (COP $5,841/kg).
In summary, the year 2021 was characterized by very positive results for the Colombian swine industry, supported by a significant increase in the demand for pork that was on par with the increase in prices.
