On January 18, the 17th Berlin Agriculture Ministers’ Conference on the occasion of the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) took place in Berlin, bringing together agriculture ministers from 62 countries. The ministers recognized that while a growing world population requires healthy and nutritious food and economic prosperity, diminishing natural resources, land degradation and drought, increasing biodiversity loss, and the impacts of climate change and pollution pose major challenges, especially for developing countries, recognizing that sustainable and resilient agriculture and food systems are crucial for global food security and nutrition.
The ministers concluded, among other things, the urgent need to intensify efforts and called on the global community to join forces to achieve the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goal on Zero Hunger as well as the importance of a sustainable bioeconomy, which can be instrumental in improving sustainability. According to the ministers, when renewable biological resources are sustainably sourced, produced, managed, and processed, the bioeconomy can contribute to social, economic, and environmental development and to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
