On October 13, 2021, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild boar hunted on October 8 in the district of Meissen. This is the first evidence of ASF outside the district of Görlitz in the State of Saxony.
The wild boar was hunted east of the federal highway A 13 near Radeburg and was surrendered to the responsible veterinary authority. As a result, a local crisis center has been set up and is working closely with the animal disease control center.
The positive finding has been made within the framework of Saxony's ASF surveillance program, according to which all hunted wild boar must be tested for ASF. This early warning system, introduced in April 2020 in the districts of Görlitz and Bautzen, was extended to the districts of Meissen, Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Iron Mountains, and the state capital Dresden on September 22, 2021.
Currently, 549 cases of ASF have been confirmed in wild boar in Saxony.
