During the first 3 months of 2017, African swine fever (ASF) has appeared in new areas in Ukraine. Specifically, there are confirmations of cases in Ternopl, Kherson, Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Ivano-Frankovsk and Zaporozh'ye. In this way, since 2014, the disease has spread in all the country, except in the oblast of Lviv. During the first trimester of 2017, outbreaks have also been confirmed in Lugansk, where no cases had appeared since the start of the disease in 2014, as well as in other regions already affected by the disease, such as Chernigov, Rovno, Poltava, Odessa, Nikolayev, Kirovograd, Khar'Kov, Kiev, Vinnitsa and Cherkassy. A total of 52 outbreaks have been confirmed in domestic pigs, most of them on backyard farms, although there are 11 commercial farms (some of them large) affected, whilst for the moment there are only 2 outbreaks confirmed in wild boars.
After the rise in ASF outbreaks from June to September 2016, with 186 outbreaks in pigs and 49 in wild boars in only 4 months, Russia has notified, in the first 3 months of 2017, a total of 7 outbreaks in pigs (all of them on backyard farms) and 8 new outbreaks in wild boars. We must highlight the appearance of the disease in domestic pigs on a backyard farm located in the oblast of Irkutskaya, clearly far away from the outbreaks detected up to now.
Lithuania has confirmed, in only 3 months, 138 cases in wild boars. The outbreaks have been confirmed in the regions of Panevezys, Utena, Kaunas and Vilnius, in the oriental half of the country. During 2016, the outbreaks in wild boars added up 285. So far this year, only one outbreak has been confirmed in domestic pigs.
The number of outbreaks in wild boars in Poland have rocketed in these first months of 2017, with 87 confirmed outbreaks, beating, in only 3 months, the total outbreaks confirmed in 2016 (81 outbreaks in wild boars). We must underline that so far this year the disease has only affected wild boars, and that no outbreaks have been detected in domestic pigs. The disease is circumscribed to the voivodats of Mazowieckie, Lubelskie and Podlaskie, in the east of Poland, in the areas near the border with Belarus and Ukraine.
During last March, Moldova notified 2 new ASF outbreaks on backyard farms in the regions of Soroca and Edinet. They are the third and fourth outbreaks of the disease in this country after its first confirmation last September 2016, with two outbreaks on backyard farms in Donduseni, a case that the WOAH deemed solved during November.
Regarding Latvia and Estonia, according to the data reported by both to the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS), Latvia has notified two new outbreaks in domestic pigs and 219 outbreaks in wild boars (up to April 12th 2017), whilst Estonia has confirmed 272 in wild boars (up to April 12th 2017).
In Italy, where the disease is endemic and is present in the island of Sardinia, 10 outbreaks have been confirmed in domestic pigs and 28 in wild boars, according to the data of the ADNS.
