The National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance (PRAN), coordinated by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), has presented the results of the first analysis of the cross-border working group composed of PRAN, the French Veterinary Medicines Agency (ANMV), and the Portuguese Institution for the Authorization of Veterinary Medicines (DGAMV).
This working group was created to promote the development of new antimicrobial drugs and alternatives to the use of antimicrobials, in order to solve the problem of the existing gap, particularly in minor species.
As highlighted during the "Workshop on veterinary drugs: improving the availability of antimicrobials and their alternatives", this problem can have a direct impact on the emergence and development of resistance. On the one hand, due to the lack of availability of alternatives to the use of antimicrobials for prevention, such as vaccines, and on the other hand, due to the small number of available veterinary drugs containing antimicrobials, which means that the same compounds are constantly used, with the consequent risk of generating resistance.
During the event:
- The tools currently available in the legislation to facilitate the industry's authorization of new compounds or the authorization of substances already registered for other species and indications were presented;
- emphasis was placed on current antimicrobial priorities in veterinary medicine and their alternatives, by sector;
- it was recalled that the analysis of medicine shortage problems is one of the pillars of the Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe adopted in November 2020;
- the most urgent priorities detected by species in the three countries were presented;
- The issues facing the pharmaceutical industry and the tools that can be used to address the problem were presented;
- the opportunities and challenges posed by the new veterinary drug regulation were presented.
