Danish Crown's Board of Representatives has intensively developed and debated the ideas behind weaner ownership since they were presented in April. Following a vote at an extraordinary meeting of the Board of Representatives on May 8, the owners decided to adopt the proposal to offer a new form of ownership starting July 1.
According to Chairman of the Board, Asger Krogsgaard, this is a way to ensure piglet producers' sales, just as current shareholders have always been guaranteed sales of their slaughter animals. Piglet shareowners will commit to delivering a specific number of piglets per year, as has been the case with finishing pigs.
Krogsgaard stated that the piglet joint ownership model creates a framework for binding cooperation between the piglet producer, the finishing pig producer, and the slaughterhouse - a kind of integrator model - which can help to protect all parties against the drastic fluctuations that occasionally hit the markets. A higher degree of integration between all links in the value chain will give Danish Crown precise insight into the number of pigs in the cooperative owners' barns.
