In the first 9 months of 2018, 42.36 million pigs were slaughtered in Germany: some 1.08 million less (or -2.5%) than in the same period in 2017, according to the information provided by the Ministry of Agriculture of Spain based on data from Destatis.

The production of pork dropped during the aforementioned period by some 99,400 tonnes (-2.4%), reaching 3.99 million tonnes, and this was due, on the one hand to a drop in the imports of foreign pigs for their slaughter, and on the other hand on the decrease in the number of pigs sent to the abattoirs by the German farmers: 556,800 pigs less (-1.4%), reaching 39.84 million pigs.

In the first 9 months of 2018, some 2.49 million pigs from other EU member countries were butchered in German abattoirs: 521,000 animals less (-17.3%) than during the same period in 2017.
