According to data published by the GPP, provided by INE as preliminary data on the slaughter of pigs in Portugal in the first semester of 2023, and compared to the same period of 2022, a decrease of 6.1% is observed in the total number of pigs slaughtered (-120,320 heads), from 1,988,663 pigs slaughtered in the first semester of 2022 to 1,868,343 heads slaughtered in 2023. This is a continuation of the trend already observed in 2022, where there had been a decrease of about 2.1% in the slaughter of finishing pigs compared to 2021.
Total slaughter weight also fell, but less steeply (-4.8%), meaning that the average carcass weight was higher than the 2022 weight. Total weight went from 166,851.0 tons in 2022 (83.9 kg average) to 158,723.6 tons this year (85.0 kg average weight).
Regarding the slaughter breeding stock, 19,160 head (-9.4%) were slaughtered in 2023 compared to 21,150 head in 2022. Total weight decreased by 12.9%, from 3,211.1 tons in 2022 (151.8 kg average weight) to 2,797.1 in 2023 (146.0 kg average weight).
