During 2018, The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration carried out a control on the cleaning and disinfection of a total of 300 lorries pertaining to 89 different transport companies that had transported pigs to other EU countries, after the unloading of the animals, seeing that in several cases the procedures were inappropriate.
Although all the lorries were cleaned after the unloading of the animals, 42.3% of the trucks were not cleaned nor disinfected enough to completely avoid the risk of spreading African swine fever, for example.
The control was carried out on lorries that travelled to Belgium, Denmark, Croatia, The Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany.
The results of the campaign show that the insufficient cleaning and disinfection problem regarding the lorries must be set forth at the EU level. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration will lay out the problem and contact the Danish shippers' commercial organisations.
