In 2016, piglet mortality was 20.9% and in 2021 it had increased to 23.4%. The increase during that period was due to an unintended, negative correlation between two traits, feed utilization and survival. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food handled the negative correlation by introducing a new breeding target in the summer of 2022 that aimed to ensure a higher piglet survival rate. According to figures presented by the Ministry, piglet mortality decreased by nearly 1% in 2023.
