As of May 1, it is now legally required for slurry pits in existing finishing pig barns and in all new pig barns to be emptied at least once a week (or when the manure height reaches 10 cm). This is according to the 2021 "Agreement on green transformation of Danish agriculture."

The aim of the measure is to prevent the presence of slurry in a high-temperature environment that favors methane production. Moving manure away from the barn to biogas or storage tanks will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Danish pig production, corresponding to 150,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year by 2025 and 170,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year by 2030.

The requirement does not apply for barns where slurry acidification technologies or ammonia reduction techniques are used, or for barns with organic pig production.

A logbook must be kept of the emptying, which must be presented during municipal inspections.
