The progressive technification of the Ecuadorian pig industry has raised confidence in the market. In 9 years, the consumption per capita of pork in Ecuador has gone from 6.88 to 10.90 kg.
The start of the industrialisation of this sector dates back to 2005, according to Mr José Orellana, executive manager of the Pig Producers' Association of Ecuador (Asociación de Porcicultores del Ecuador, ASPE). It was the time when the work in the improvement of genetics, feeding and health matters started.
This effort has driven the market demand, and has caused small, medium and large companies to increase their production levels. If we take a look at the figures in 2009, production has almost doubled, going from 90,000 to 173,194 tonnes, according to what is foreseen in 2018.
The home supply is enough to cater for the domestic demand. Nevertheless, the industry still needs to buy certain products that are still not produced in sufficient amounts in Ecuador, such as hide and fat, that are very much needed by the cold meats industry.
