The European agrifood model aims to provide safe, healthy food whilst fostering high-quality production and heeding social and environmental considerations and the long-term sustainability of the industry. To improve EU agrifood products, the EESC suggests cutting red tape linking them to geographical origins, without compromising quality. Acknowledging that one third of food warnings in the internal market originate outside the EU, the EESC urges more stringent controls to keep substandard products off EU territory. The opinion calls for action to promote the EU agrifood model in international forums like the WTO and the FAO, and to secure global acceptance of its sustainability rules.
