The importance of pig farming in Santa Catarina not only for the state but also for the country makes the issue of sustainability in the sector essential for maintaining and acquiring new consumer markets in the face of a greater number of countries adopting regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“Sustainability has motivated more than discussions, it has been a defining factor in accessing markets, with Brazilian products competing for the best certifications,” explained José Antônio Ribas Jr, executive director of Agro and Sustainability at Seara.
The general manager of Embrapa Swine and Poultry, Everton Krabbe, said that despite Brazil's prominent position in pig farming and the animal protein industry, it does not have sustainability metrics and indicators adapted to the country's reality. For this reason, the agency is developing an initiative to meet this demand, the Brazil Sustainable Pig Farming Project, which was presented to the Santa Catarina agro-industry during a meeting of the sector's Development Chamber of the Federation of Industries of Santa Catarina (FIESC) on September 11.
The project aims to create a sustainability certification with indicators suited to the nation's reality since Brazilian agricultural production has been penalized in the analysis of emissions by the measurements imposed, which do not consider regional characteristics.
