During the meeting the Russian and British experts in human medicine, veterinary medicine, and pharmacology discussed different aspects of antimicrobial resistance problem: use of antimicrobials and resistance in domestic medicine, development and promotion of new antibiotics, resistance to antiviral and antimicrobial agents, genetic research and other topics. Special attention was given to development and implementation of global strategies on resistance control at all levels.
This year the FGBI “VGNKI” is planning to perform large scale tests for sensitivity of zoonotic bacteria recovered from samples of food products and biological material from the entire territory of the country within resistance monitoring. Further on the Institution can act as a reference laboratory providing training for the Rosselkhoznadzor regional laboratories collecting and processing data from the entire country for their subsequent forwarding to the OIE and other international organizations.
Basing on international – primarily European - experience, the FGBI VGNKI finds it necessary to include the following measures into the Russian strategy of antimicrobial safety provision: improvement of recording system for antibiotic use in livestock production, decrease in veterinary use of antimicrobials (introduction of drug prescription, ban for use as growth promoters), development of alternative control methods, and infection prevention.
