Between September 17 and 24, 2021, 245 outbreaks of particularly serious animal diseases were reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in 19 countries worldwide. The notifications were published on the official website of the OIE.
A case of rabies was reported in Germany (1). The country had been free from the disease since 2005 and the infected animal (dog) had been legally imported from Turkey.
African swine fever (ASF) was first reported in Haiti (1). The disease had previously been reported in the country in 1984. ASF has also been detected in Germany (22 outbreaks), Dominican Republic (30), Latvia (4), Poland (55), Romania (62) and the Philippines (34).
Highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks were reported in Viet Nam (4), India (8), Finland (2) and Sweden (1). Disease caused by H5N1, H5N6 and H5N8 subtypes has been reported in poultry and wild birds.
A single case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was notified by the United Kingdom (1). The case was detected during routine government surveillance.
Foci of contagious nodular dermatitis continue to be reported in Cambodia (1) and Thailand (1). Rift Valley Fever has been reported in Libya (4). Foot and mouth disease was reported in Namibia (1). New outbreaks of West Nile fever were reported from Germany (6). Infection was detected in zoo and synanthropic birds and horses at a farm in Berlin. In Kazakhstan (1), anthrax. Tularaemia has been reported in Norway (2).
New cases of coronavirus infection COVID-19 (SARS-COV-2) (3 outbreaks) and haemorrhagic disease of rabbits (1) were reported in the USA. Coronavirus infection was detected in a pet dog and in gorillas at a zoo.
