EU agri-food exports remain high

The latest monthly agri-food trade report shows that the EU exports remain strong at €11.1 billion in April 2018. This represents an increase of 3.7% compared to April 2017.

For the 12-months period of May 2017 to April 2018, EU agri-food exports reached a value of EUR 137.2 billion, corresponding to an increase of 2.8% in value terms compared to the same period one year ago.

Major gains in annual values (EUR million) have been achieved in agri-food exports to the USA (+750; +4%), Russia (+601; +10%), Japan (+547; +9%) and Turkey (+344; +10%). Further annual increases were recorded in agri-food exports to Ukraine (+301; +19%), China (+257; +2%) Serbia (+240; 25%) and Singapore (+236; +12%).

In EUR million, wine (+1 028; +9%), infant food (+700; +10%), spirits and liqueurs (+559; +5%) and pet food (+550; +15%) exports have been performing very well over the last twelve months. Export performance on a yearly basis also increased for sugar (+435), which saw and exceptional export growth rate of 62% on an annual basis.

On the other hand, wheat exports have experienced the most significant drop in value terms on an annual basis (EUR -1 254; -26%). Other categories with notable losses in export values over the last 12 months were pork meat (-482; -9%), fruit (excluding citrus and tropical fruit) (-207; -9%), cereals (excluding wheat and rice) (-198; -11%), cigars and cigarettes (-164; -5%); vegetable oils (excluding palm oil and olive oil) (-153; -6%), vegetables (-141; -5%), cocoa paste and powder (-121; -9%) and beer (-119; -4%).
