Wild boar

The significant increase in the number of cases in Hungary is worrisome. The disease first appeared in the country in 2018, and has already reported 3005 cases so far this year, almost doubling the total number of its confirmed cases in 2019 (1598), making Hungary the country with the highest number of cases. Poland, with 2793 confirmed cases to date, also exceeds its total number of confirmed cases in 2019 (2468). Bulgaria has also doubled the number of cases (340 vs 165 in 2019), and Romania has already reported 550 cases (683 in 2019).

Domestic pigs

In contrast, outbreaks of ASF in domestic pigs have decreased compared to the year prior. So far this year, 346 outbreaks have been confirmed, almost all of them in Romania (321). However, it should be noted that the number of confirmed outbreaks in this country is increasing at slower pace compared to 2019, taking into account that, out of all the 1,848 outbreaks confirmed in domestic pigs for the entire EU in 2019, 1,724 were from Romania.

Perhaps the most worrying situation is the ASF cases in domestic pigs in Poland. Although the number of outbreaks is low (just 6), most of them have occurred near the border with Germany.
