The regulations, aimed at preventing the sale of products from deforested land in the EU, will now apply to large operators starting December 30, 2025, and to micro and small businesses starting June 30, 2026.
This decision follows concerns from stakeholders about their ability to comply with the regulation before the original 2024 deadline. The postponement follows a provisional agreement reached between the European Parliament and the Council, which emphasizes the need to reduce administrative burdens while ensuring effective implementation.
The European Commission committed to completing the necessary digital platform and risk rating system by mid-2025, providing predictability for businesses throughout the supply chain.
Christine Schneider, Parliament's rapporteur, stressed the importance of this postponement to allow companies and authorities to prepare adequately. The agreement also includes future simplifications and impact assessments, particularly for low-risk countries, which incentivize improved forest conservation practices. The regulation is a key step in combating global deforestation, which has led to the loss of 420 million hectares of forest between 1990 and 2020. EU consumption contributes to 10% of global deforestation, driven largely by products such as palm oil and soy.
