The Council examined recent developments in agricultural trade, focusing on the challenges and opportunities posed by current global uncertainties. Ministers discussed creating a €1 billion reserve to mitigate potential negative effects of the Mercosur agreement, while some welcomed the newly finalized EU-Mexico trade deal.
Member states emphasized the need for fair competition between EU and non-EU markets and called for further assessment of the cumulative impacts of trade agreements on the EU agricultural sector. Many delegations highlighted the importance of aligning production standards and identified sanitary and phytosanitary measures as major non-tariff obstacles.
The European Commission acknowledged the consensus on ensuring fair competition and agreed to analyze further the impact of trade deals on EU farmers. It also noted the importance of creating a stable trade environment, particularly regarding trade with Ukraine. Luxembourg’s proposal on fair international trade practices was also discussed.
