In her address to Parliament, von der Leyen set out her vision for Europe, stressing that freedom remains the central driving force of the European Union. She stressed the need to protect this freedom through strategic choices, guided by a “compass for competitiveness”.
This initiative will be based on three pillars: closing the innovation gap with the USA and China, developing a joint plan for decarbonization and competitiveness, and strengthening security by limiting strategic dependencies.
The new Commission includes members from a wide range of backgrounds, including politics, business, and journalism, reflecting a broad diversity of experience. Von der Leyen also announced seven key initiatives planned for the first 100 days, including a clean industry pact, a white paper on European defense, an initiative on AI factories, a cybersecurity action plan for health infrastructures, a vision for agriculture and food, the pre-enlargement policy reviews and the youth policy dialogues to be organized by each commissioner to make the voice of the next generation of Europeans better heard.
She concluded by calling for close cooperation between European institutions, stressing that unity will be crucial to meeting the challenges of the next five years.
