Following the adoption in June of Council conclusions on the protection and welfare of animals (10478/12 ADD1), Austria and the Netherlands briefed the Council on the welfare of farm animals during transport (12403/12).
Some member states supported Austria and the Netherlands asking for a revision of the current legal provisions on the protection of animals during transport while others refused such a revision. As the report from the Commission on the impact of regulation 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport is taken into account in these conclusions, Austria and the Netherlands considered essential for the EU to commit itself to reinforce the current legal framework in this area by envisaging a revision of regulation 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport in particular by setting a time limit for the transport of animals.
The Commission considers that there is currently no need for revising the legal provisions on the protection of animals during transport and favour instead the harmonisation of the implementation of these provisions in the member states and their enforcement.
