In 2022, pigmeat remained the European Union's leading exporting meat product despite a year-on-year decrease. Last year, the EU exported EUR 13.8 billion in pig meat, a 5% decrease from 2021 and a 9% decrease compared to 2020.
There was a massive 40% decline in the quantities of pigmeat exported to China (-982 thousand t) leading to a drop in value of EUR 1.9 billion. Still, EU pigmeat is the largest exported commodity to China in value, now close to cereals preparations and milling products (at EUR 3.3 billion).
EU imports of pigmeat increased slightly to reach EUR 373 million representing an increase in value of EUR 80 million compared to 2021 and a 28 thousand t increase in volume.
