European Union: Several ministers of Agriculture demand improvements in pig welfare

Ministers of Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden and Germany signed a joint declaration for a revision of the European directive on pig welfare, with the aim of improving it.

During the International Conference on the Protection of Animals, which took place in Copenhagen on 29 and 30, April 2015, the Danish Minister of Agriculture, Dan Jørgensen, together with the ministers of Agriculture of the Netherlands, Sharon Dijksma, Sweden, Sven Erik Bucht and Germany, Christian Schmidt, signed a joint declaration for a revision of the European directive on pig welfare, with the aim of improving it. 

The petition focuses on the improvement of facilities, reduction of tail docking and the prohibition of surgical castration of piglets without anesthetic. Other areas of improvement include increasing the minimum available space, adding manipulatives to enrich the pigs environment, extending the period of group housing for sows, and removing fully-slatted floors.
