Within the last Council of Ministers of Agriculture that took place at the beginning of this week, France and Spain reiterate their concern about the concomitant spread of several large-scale epizootic diseases, mainly vector-borne diseases. Given the health and economic consequences of these diseases for farmers, the availability of sufficient volumes of safe and effective vaccines is a crucial issue in order to control the spread of these diseases, limit their impact and ensure the safety of live animal trade. Antigen or vaccine banks are tools, together with others, to ensure vaccine responsiveness and availability at EU level.

We request that consideration be given to a coordinated approach at EU level to anticipate vaccine needs and work to improve the availability (regarding quantity and delay) of vaccines in animal health sector.

This issue is further evidence of the importance to support, now and in the future, a coordinated approach at European level to animal health.
