All animal categories have experienced this decrease except for piglets under 20 kg. Sows decreased by .05%, dropping to 14 million, fattening pigs by 2.7%, dropping to 57 million, and growing pigs (20-50kg) by 1.9%, dropping to 36 million, while piglets have increased by 2.3%, reaching 43 million.
Germany, with a drop of 1.6% in their herd, maintains their place as the principal European producer while in Spain, the second principal producer, the herd, mostly fattening pigs, decreased by 4.6% during the first months of 2010 and the census of breeders increased by 3.4%. The census in Poland increased by 4.6%, making them the third principal European producer.
