Newly-published census results show the European pig herd was in decline from June 2009 through to June 2010. The total European Union sow herd fell 0.6 percent during this period and is predicted to continue falling through next year.

This trend has not been repeated in all countries; While in Holland exports have fallen by 4,5%, in Germany by 2,9%, in France by 2,2%, in Italy by 1,9% and in Denmark by 1,6%, in other countries, the census has increased. Such is the case of Spain, which is the producer country that registered the highest increase at 3,4%, followed by the United Kingdom with 2,7%, Poland with 1,7% and Ireland with 1%.
