According to the last data published by the Eurostat relative to the sow census in December 2012 in the European Union, the majority of the member states are undergoing decreases in comparison with the same period of the previous year.
Although some countries have not presented their data and others are provisional, the main drops, according to the data managed by the Eurostat, have taken place in Slovenia (-20.4%; passing from 25,500 sows in December 2011 to 20,300 sows in December 2012), Italy, that has gone from 708,800 sows to 621,400 sows (-12.33%), or Poland, that has passed from 1,124,900 sows to 1,012,100 sows (-10.02%).
With respect to the main swine producers in the European Union, the drops by 6.41% in the case of Spain (from 2.40 million sows in 2011 to 2.250 million sows in 2012), by 3.46% in Germany (from 2.19 million sows to 2.12 million sows), by 2.63% in France, by 2.26% in The Netherlands, with 1.07 and 1,08 million sows in December 2012, respectively, and a drop by 0.8% in the case of Denmark (from 1.24 million sows in 2011 to 1.229 million sows in December 2012) stand out.
