According to the FEFAC's production estimates for 2015, Spain, with a total of 23,323,000 tonnes, has been the second feed producer in the EU, with an increase by 2.7% with respect to 2014, and it is behind Germany (decrease by 2.8% with respect to 2014), with France now holding the third place (drop by 0.4% with respect to 2014). From the total estimation of feed produced by the industrial sector, 9,937 thousand tonnes were allocated to the pig sector, whilst 7,386 thousand tonnes were allocated to cattle, 4,807 thousand tonnes to fowl, 1,050 thousand tonnes to pets, and 143,000 tonnes to other species, although the kinds of feeds taken as references for the FEFAC's production estimates are not exactly the same as the ones taken into account by the MAGRAMA. In these data, the FEFAC does not bear in mind the production by farms in Annex II that produce feed for their self-consumption, but only the production of feed by the industrial sector.
According to the MAGRAMA's data, the total feed production in Spain reached, in 2015, 31,330,851 tonnes. This amount is the sum of the feed production by all the feed producers, this is, those that hold the economic activity code C or E in the Register of Businesses. An increase by 1.6% with respect to to 2014 is seen, having included the data regarding the feed production and raw materials consumption by premixes producers. The production of feed for livestock reached 30,322,864 tonnes: 96.7% of the total feed produced. The amount of feed produced for livestock in 2015 has grown by 1.4% with respect to 2014. For other species (pets, fur animals and others), 1,007,987 tonnes produces have been declared, a figure that exceeds by 19.2% that reached in 2014 (845,440 tonnes).
The distribution of feeds depending on the species mantains similar values to those seen in the previous years, with the production of pig feed clearly holding the first place, with 47% of the total feed produced (14,771,963 tonnes), with a decrease in the amount produced and the percentage with respect to the total Spanish feed production (49.6% in 2014); followed by feed for cattle (6,869,848 tonnes), which entails almost 22% of the total. It is followed by feed for fowl, whose production was 18.3% of the total; and feed for sheep and goats, with 5.5% of the total, among the most relevant productions.
Regarding the production of feed by Autonomous Communities, Catalonia still is the first feed producer in Spain, with 21.6% of the total production; followed by Aragon, with 13.7%; Castile and Leon, with 13.4%. It is followed by Galicia (9.7%), Andalusia (9.6%), Murcia (7.1%) and Castile-La Mancha (5.8%). Valencia produces 4.9% and Extremadura 4.7%, followed by Navarre, with 4.1%.
