Fewer farming operations in Switzerland

Both the number of Swiss pig farms and the number of animals are decreasing.

In 2019 there were 50,038 farms in Switzerland, 1.6% fewer than in 2018 which had also declined by 1.5% from the year prior, revealing a downward trend.

The industry employed 150,100 people, down 1.5% from the previous year. Of the total number of workers, 12% were foreigners and most were part-time (55%). The family labor force accounted for more than three-quarters of the total labor.

The pig census decreased by 4.1%, as did the dairy cattle census (-1.7%) while the number of poultry increased (+2.5%). With regard to the pig sector, the number of farms stood at 5,800, a decrease of 5.7%.
