Last January there was a meeting organized jointly by the International Centre for Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM); the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Montpellier; the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry of France; and FRANCEAGRIMER, whose goal was to start up a Mediterranean net for the development of an information system regarding the agricultural markets.

This net is the result of a shared commitment between the Ministers of Agriculture of the CIHEAM, that in September 2012 declared, in Malta, the commitment of "contributing, in close cooperation with the Supervision Group of the G-20, to the development of an information system regarding the markets of the Mediterranean countries that are members of the AMIS (Information System regarding the Agricultural Markets) and exchanging information in the fight against the volatility of the prices in the agricultural markets", leaning on the knowledge and experience of the CIHEAM, including the strengthening of the abilities of the countries and the FAO.

With the support of the AMIS Secretariat, whose headquarters are in Rome, and of the FAO, the experts in the markets of 12 countries of all the Mediterranean area that are members of the CIHEAM, and the EU, exchanged ideas on the creation of this net that, initially, will deal with the main cereals in order to guarantee food safety in the Mediterranean area.
