Following the new outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Hungary and Slovakia, a meeting of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (PAFF) was held yesterday, during which the Member States reviewed and unanimously agreed to implement new emergency measures.
This map shows the current restricted zones, endorsed by the Member States on 27 March 2025, which include an additional restriction zone with a radius of at least 50 km.

These emergency measures will be continuously adapted, as necessary, to take into account the evolution of the epidemiological situation.
Meanwhile, results from the national reference laboratory and the EU reference laboratory for foot-and-mouth disease indicated that the virus affecting Hungary is serotype O of the foot-and-mouth disease virus, with the closest genetic sequence corresponding to a strain from Pakistan in 2018. Furthermore, the foot-and-mouth disease virus detected in the samples collected in Slovakia fully matches the virus found in Hungary.
