This new term supplements the reference activities of the Animal Health Laboratory at Maisons-Alfort regarding foot-and-mouth disease, especially in the context of its reference terms at a national, European and international level, and it implies a recognition of the ANSES’ commitment to the animal health problems.
The Animal Health Laboratory at Maisons-Alfort was founded in 1901 to fight foot-and-mouth disease. Since its establishment, it has participated in the fight against this disease at a national, European and international level, and it actively collaborates with international organisations (World Organisation for Animal Health, FAO, EuFMD). It is the national reference laboratory for foot-and-mouth disease, it was appointed as the WOAH/OIE’s Reference Laboratory in June 2015, and it will be soon appointed as the EU’s reference laboratory as of January 1st, 2019, in association with the Belgian Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre (CERVA).
Its appointment as the WOAH/FAO’s Reference Centre represents an acknowledgement of the ANSES’ scientific influence at an international level. This appointment will strengthen its cooperation with the WOAH/FAO and its participation in the fight against foot-and-mouth disease at an international level.
