France: coming into force of the labelling of origin of meat and milk

The identification of the origin of meat in ready-cooked food and of milk in bottles and cartons and milk products became compulsory as of January 1st 2017.

Initially, this measure will be carried out experimentally for two years as a result of the negotiations between the Minister of Agriculture of France, Mr. Stéphane Le Foll and the European Commission.

The labelling is compulsory when the amount of meat in a ready-cooked food is at least 8% in weight, whilst for milk products the origin of the milk shall be included in the label when the proportion of milk is at least 50%.

The deadline for the companies to update their labels is March 31st.
