France: Low carbon label for pig farming now open to public consultation

France has put out for public consultation the decision to approve a “Label Bas Carbone” (Low Carbon Label) methodology specifically dedicated to the swine industry, aimed at projects whose objective is to mitigate climate change through changes in practices - and even systems - within pig farms. The methodology has been developed by the Institut du porc (IFIP), with the support of several of its members and key partners.

This initiative is aimed at farms that make a five-year commitment to modify their practices to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To participate, applicants must use the GEEP tool, the main instrument for calculating emission reductions, and implement multiple levers of action beyond mere animal management.

To establish the initial carbon footprint, two types of reference scenarios can be used: a specific scenario, based on an individual diagnosis with GEEP, or a generic scenario, reserved for exceptional cases, to which a 10% penalty is applied to account for uncertainty. In all cases, an initial diagnosis is required.

Mitigation strategies include pig feeding, effluent management, building ventilation, reducing fossil energy consumption, and animal management. Their combination allows optimized emission reduction. The project must also assess the cross-environmental and socioeconomic impacts, both positive and negative, and implement corrective measures if necessary.

The final verification of the results will be carried out by a GEEP-trained auditor five years after the start of the project.
