As announced by the French Minister for Agriculture last January in connection with the French Government's plan to improve the protection and welfare of animals, the Journal Officiel de la République has just published two decrees concerning the castration of piglets and mitigating pain during animal handling.

The first decree prohibits the castration of piglets less than seven days old, effective December 31, 2021, and specifies the conditions and exceptions for castration under anesthesia and analgesia for purposes other than therapeutic or diagnostic.

A second decree authorizes farmers to use local anesthetic or analgesic treatment with the aim of eliminating or mitigating pain associated with tasks related to livestock management.
