In March 2023, the French agri-food trade surplus reached €525 million, the lowest level for the month of March since 2009. It fell by €651 million compared to March 2022 due to the effect of the growth in imports (+€614 million in one year) while exports remained relatively stable (-€37 million).
The balance of raw agricultural materials decreased significantly to 26 million euros (-507 million euros year-on-year) due to the decrease in cereal exports and the increase in imports of mainly vegetables and oilseeds.
Likewise, the trade surplus in processed products decreased to 499 million (-144 million). Imports (5.1 billion euros) increased by 410 million in one year (+9%). Purchases of meat and slaughterhouse products (mainly Spanish pork and poultry meat from Belgium and the Netherlands) increased by 122 million euros, but imports of primary and secondary processed cereal and beverage products were higher than exports.
