The Ministry of Agriculture and Food intends to implement a more ambitious animal welfare policy. Some of the measures are already included in the bill that will be discussed in the Parliament.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food of France, Mr Stéphane Travert, has presented his proposal for strengthening the government’s strategy adopted in 2016 regarding animal welfare.

The education, training and awareness of the breeders and haulers will be strengthened, and diagnostic tools regarding welfare at the farm level will be developed. The training plan for the slaughter workers will be checked. The Ministry also intends to increase the efficacy of the animal protection controls and to improve the implementation of the criminal and administrative monitoring of the inspections. The training of the inspectors is being checked. There has also been a collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, raising the awareness of pubic prosecutors and judges to facilitate the implementation of the possible criminal cases. Finally, the Minister has confirmed the commitment by the Department to promote innovation with the aim of providing alternative methods for the improvement of animal welfare.
