The total volume of all pork products imported into France decreased in 2023 after rising sharply in 2021 and 2022. The volume is estimated at 605,000 t carcass equivalent (-5.5% from 2022) plus 78,000 t in offal.
Spain remains France's main fresh and frozen pork supplier, accounting for 66% of import volumes. Germany comes next (8%), followed by the UK (8%). In 2023, Spanish operators exported 210,000 t carcass equivalent of fresh and frozen pork to France (+6.8%), mainly boneless ham and bellies as well as 67,000 t carcass equivalent of charcuterie (+7.2%), 5,000 t of fats (+10.9%), and 33,000 t of offal (-1.1%). Pork imports from Germany, France's second-largest supplier, fell by 25,000 t (-19.8%), probably reflecting the country's decreased slaughter. Offal is also down (-10.2%). Lastly, imports of charcuterie and sausages, which rose sharply in 2022, no doubt due to one-off destocking effects linked to the presence of African swine fever in Germany, returned to a lower level in 2023 than in 2021 (74,000 t carcass equivalent, -29.7%). Italy, France's third-largest supplier in terms of value, supplied mainly charcuterie (51,000 t carcass equivalent in 2023, +4.9%, including 8,500 t of hams) along with fats (10,000 t, -5.9%).
France mainly imports high-value-added products, pieces that have undergone advanced cutting for French charcuterie manufacturers, and processed products ready for consumption, sold in supermarkets and catering outlets. The total value of France's imports is estimated at 2.2 billion euros in 2023, up 17.4% year-on-year.
