According to preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), slaughterhouses in Germany produced just under 3.3 million tons of meat in the first half of 2023, down 5.9% compared with the same period last year. In total, 23.6 million head of pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, and horses were slaughtered, as well as 343.9 million chickens, turkeys, and ducks.

There were 21.6 million pigs slaughtered in Germany in the first six months of 2023, representing a decrease of 2.2 million animals slaughtered (-9.2%). The number of slaughtered animals of domestic origin was 20.9 million head, a decrease of 10% (previous year: 23.2 million). There were 741,300 animals slaughtered of foreign origin representing an increase of 19.6% compared to the same period of the previous year (619,700 head). The share of pigs of foreign origin in the total number of pigs slaughtered was therefore 3.4% (previous year: 2.6%).

Pork production has been decreasing continuously since 2017. The volume of pork produced in the first half of 2023 decreased by 9.4% (-213,000 t) compared to the same period of the previous year, at 2.1 million t.

Despite the significant decline in production, pork has accounted for the largest share of meat production in Germany for years. In the first half of 2023, 62% of the meat produced was pork, followed by poultry (23.2%) and beef (14.5%). Sheep, goat, and horse meat accounted for only about 0.4% of total production.
