Germany: 1.5% increase in meat production

During the first quarter, pork production accounted for 67.7% of total meat produced in Germany.

During the first quarter of this year Germany produced 2 million tons of meat in commercial slaughterhouses, which means an increase of 1.5% (30,200 tons) compared to the same period last year.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) the increase in production was due to an increase of 10,250 tons of beef, 10,100 tons of pork and 9,000 tons of chicken.

During the first quarter, pork production accounted for 67.7% of total meat produced in Germany, reaching 1.37 million tons. The number of pigs slaughtered amounted to 14.6 million head, of these, 13.5 million pigs came from domestic production (92.8%) and 1.1 million (7.2%) were imported.

The main pig producing regions were North Rhine-Westphalia (481,400 tons) and Lower Saxony (425,300 tons).
