German pig population in 2020 virtually the same as the year prior

According to preliminary results, just under 26 million pigs were housed in Germany as of November 3, 2020.

According to preliminary results, just under 26.0 million pigs were kept in Germany as of November 3, 2020. This was 0.3% or 65,100 animals fewer than on November 3, 2019, with fattening pigs accounting for 45.9% or 11.9 million animals. Compared to November 2019, the number of fattening pigs increased by 195,700 animals (1.7%). In addition, nearly 7.7 million piglets and about 4.7 million young pigs were held on November 3, 2020.

The number of farms keeping pigs was 20,500 as of November 3, 2020, down 3.3%, or about 700 farms, from November 2019. In November 2018, the number was still 22,400 farms, down 8.4% or 1,900 farms over the past two years.
