At the beginning of 2020, the number of pigs for slaughter accumulating in German pens exceeded 1 million animals. While this excess decreased slightly during the first two weeks of January (-30,000 and -60,000 pigs, respectively), in the third week, the number was reduced to about 880,000 animals (-90,000 pigs). The main reason for this acceleration is German pig producers' ability to adapt.
At the same time, the supply of growing pigs is currently 7-8% lower than at the beginning of 2020 due on the one hand to the weekly reduction of piglet imports from the Netherlands and Denmark since September and on the other hand to the sharp decrease in the supply of German piglets. It is also becoming increasingly clear that supply will decline further as the year progresses.
In order to further accelerate the reduction of backlogged pigs in the pens and not encounter market saturation, better sales opportunities must be created, both in exports (from third countries) and domestically.
