According to the Federal Information Center for Agriculture (BZL), 264 companies produced a total of 21.7 million t of compound feed during the 2023/24 marketing year. While the volume of poultry feed produced increased by almost 2% to 6.3 million t, the volume of pig feed produced decreased slightly. Nevertheless, swine feed remains the most important type of feed with 8.1 million t.
Slight increase in cereal production and 2% lower oilseed meal production
For the total production volume, almost 19.2 million t of reportable raw materials were processed. The use of cereals in compound feed increased slightly to 48.8%, with almost 10.6 million t in 2023/24 (10.5 million t in 2022/23). In contrast, the use of oilseed meals in compound feed has slightly decreased, with almost 5.5 million t in 2023/24 (-2% compared to the previous year).
About 60% of compound feed manufacturers are in the north
The majority of compound feed manufacturers (157 companies) are located in the northern German federal states, such as Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Schleswig-Holstein. Around 21% are located in southern Länder, such as Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland. Fifty-one companies are located in the east of the country.
