African swine fever virus (ASF) has been detected on a domestic pig farm in Hesse for the first time. It is a small farm with nine pigs located near Biebesheim am Rhein (district of Groß-Gerau). During an inspection, a blood sample was taken from an animal showing symptoms of the disease. The Hessian state laboratory confirmed the suspicion and the animals were culled under veterinary supervision.
A three-kilometer radius protection zone and a surveillance zone (ten kilometers) have been established around the farm, in which severe restrictions will apply to the trade of pigs and pig products as well as to slaughtering. The zone also extends to the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Some 3,500 pigs are reared in the area on the Hessian side.
The first case of ASF in Hesse was discovered in mid-June in a wild boar in the district of Groß-Gerau. So far, 15 positive cases have been detected in wild boar.
