Germany: Decrease in pig production

With slightly less than 57.9 million pigs slaughtered in 2017, pig slaughterings dropped by 2.6%.

In 2017, meat production by the German commercial abattoirs decreased after a recent slight increase. According to the data of the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), meat production dropped by 2.0% (-167,000 tonnes) in comparison with 2016, reaching a total of 8.11 million tonnes. This figure is way below the total volume in 2016 (8.28 million tonnes).

With slightly less than 57.9 million pigs slaughtered in 2017, pig slaughterings dropped by 2.6% (-1.5 million heads) in comparison with 2016. The slaughtering volume of imported pigs decreased significantly by 18% (-839,000 animals). During the same period, the number of German pigs slaughtered dropped by 1.3% (-690.000 animals). Overall, pork production, that reached 5.45 million tonnes, fell by about 127,600 tonnes.
