The number of samples positive for Salmonella is steadily decreasing. The proportion of pig farms with a high Salmonella risk decreased from 5.8% in 2005 to 1.6% at the beginning of 2021, which represents a decrease of 72% and the lowest level recorded since the start of Salmonella control in the QS system (the quality assurance system for food in Germany).

At the same time, the number of people falling ill with salmonellosis in Germany has decreased significantly in recent years. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), 76,990 people suffered from gastrointestinal illness caused by Salmonella in 2001, but in 2020 German health authorities recorded only 8,743 cases.
