The State Office for Agriculture, Food Safety, and Fisheries (LALLF) of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania reported a positive ASF result in samples from clinically abnormal pigs from a finishing farm in the district of West Pomerania-Greifswald, which was then confirmed by the FLI, the national reference laboratory for the disease.

The finishing farm is located in the municipality of Passewalk and has a total of 3,577 pigs. It is located close to the border with Poland. The area had been previously considered free of ASF and therefore was not included in the Annex of the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/594.

The exact cause of the entry of the disease is still unclear. However, there is currently nothing that indicates an active epidemic among wild boars in the region.

African swine fever was first recorded in domestic pigs in Germany in July 2021. Since then, there have been a total of eight outbreaks in domestic pigs in Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The last outbreak was detected in February 2023.
