The European Commission has rejected the joint application by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the state of Lower Saxony to shorten the duration of the African swine fever (ASF) restriction zone in Lower Saxony.

According to the Commission, with ASF outbreaks in three different federal states (Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg, and Lower Saxony), the current epidemiological situation in Germany has generally worsened. In this context, there is an increased risk of additional ASF spread in different and distant areas of Germany.
